High street chain to offer HPV jabs

Older women who are ineligible for the HPV vaccine on the NHS could be vaccinated on the high street, after Boots UK unveiled plans to offer the jab in 134 stores across England and Wales.

Currently, the jab is only offered to girls aged 12-18 before they have come into contact with HPV strains. The Boots Pharmacy+ Cervical Cancer Vaccination Service will be aimed at women aged 18-54.

Women who wish to have the vaccination must be registered with a GP. They will have a consultation with a pharmacist to ensure eligibility and to receive general advice on sexual health.

If eligible, the patient will receive the first of the course of three jabs and be booked in for the second and third vaccinations, for one month and six months later respectively. The complete course will cost £405.

But a spokeswoman for Cancer Research UK said: 'We do not know how effective the vaccine is in women who have already come into contact with HPV.

'The best way that older women can protect themselves against cervical cancer is through the free NHS cervical screening programme, which has saved 100,000 lives since its introduction in 1988.'
