Health secretary Andy Burnham has criticised the Conservatives for promoting an MEP at the heart of a row over the state of the NHS.

Daniel Hannan, MEP for South East England, has been appointed party spokesman on legal affairs.

Last month Healthcare Republic reported how shadow Conservative health secretary Andrew Lansley criticised Mr Hannan for painting a ‘negative and partial' picture of the NHS.

Mr Burnham said: ‘David Cameron is happy to deride Tory MEP Daniel Hannan in front of the cameras and claim that his views are not the true face of the Tory party. But privately Cameron rewards Hannan for his attacks on the NHS with a plum job on the front bench in the European parliament.

‘Will the real David Cameron please stand up?'

  • Are the Tories right to promote Mr Hannan?
