Chagford's Dr Sarah Wollaston, who was selected earlier this summer in Britain's first open primary, said of QOF: ‘If it can't be counted then it doesn't count. That is not great care.'

Dr Wollaston said that the introduction of the new GMS contract in 2004 had created a tick-box culture'.

She was inspired to join politics by the successful campaign to save the district hospital at nearby Moretonhampstead.

Dr Wollaston warned GPs that they should be ‘realistic' about funding.

‘I do think that at the moment GP income isn't bad,' she said. ‘We need to get away from the clocking-off mentality creeping into the profession.'
