GPs 'need to prove QOF improves outcomes'

Proposed changes to QOF will put pressure on GPs to prove that the framework is effective at improving patient outcomes, an editorial in this week's Lancet argued.
The authors said that there is still a lack of evidence to support QOF's focus on ‘process and crude data collection'.
There is concern, they said, that the QOF encourages overtreatment and creates inequalities. ‘Of greater concern is that care has not improved in areas not included in the QOF, eg, some aspects of diabetes care', they commented.
The Lancet concludes: ‘GPs will need to show that, irrespective of incentives for surrogate endpoints, they can deliver better evidence-based care to improve patient outcomes.'
