Practices bid for GP funds to expand training

Practices are lining up for their share of the government's £100m in new money to expand GP training.
The cash will support a 37% increase in training places for GP registrars by 2011 and new 18-month training slots.
Practices in the most underdoctored PCTs have been jostling for the cash, with Wolverhampton, Knowsley and Barking and Dagenham PCTs all oversubscribed.
Most practices bidding for the money are GP-owned. A minority are owned by the NHS or a local council.
Practices that win the cash have to commit to taking on extra trainees for five years.
The cash injection for training was announced in the chancellor's autumn budget.
Deaneries have revised the numbers of trainees they can take on in a bid to correct regional health inequalities.
But the overall increase in registrars means that only the South East coast deanery stands to lose registrar places by 2011. South East Coast had 278 vacancies for the 2009 intake but will only offer 264 in 2011.
Vacancies in all other deaneries will rise. North West deanery will see a rise of 106 vacancies by 2011.
