Andrew Lansley is facing criticism for claiming £4,600 for the redecoration of his second home just months before selling it.

The shadow health secretary came under scrutiny as The Daily Telegraph’s investigation of MPs’ expenses switched its focus to the Opposition benches.

He sold the Tudor cottage in the village of Melbourn, in his Cambridgeshire South constituency, in June 2006, shortly after designating his London flat as his second home.

Mr Lansley had tried to claim for a £116 barbecue and £63 for plants, said The Daily Telegraph, but was refused because plants and garden furniture were not admissible.

Health minister Ben Bradshaw saw details of his expenses published at the weekend, in which he was reimbursed for the full mortgage interest on the London property that he part-owned with his partner.

The Daily Telegraph had previously revealed that health secretary Alan Johnson had been comparatively frugal in his expenses claims, aiding his status as front-runner to take over the Labour leadership from Gordon Brown.
