Greens would recruit more midwives
22 April 2009
An extra £500m a year for maternity services and £1.8bn for dental care is being proposed by the Green Party.
The ‘Green New Deal for the NHS’ includes one-off costs of £1bn for reorganisation and at least £12bn to buy back the private finance initiatives (PFIs) but liberating the NHS from PFI would save £1bn a year, say the Greens.
Independent Sector Treatment Centres would be axed, saving £1bn, and a further £1bn would be saved by scrapping the health care market.
The £500m a year for maternity services would mean home birth for all women who want it, support from a single midwife throughout pregnancy and a major recruitment drive for midwives.
The £1.8bn a year for dental services would end difficulties patients have finding an NHS dentist.
