Nurses back NMC guidance on older people care
17 March 2009
Guidance produced by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) for the care of older people 'will help nurses deliver the best possible care', according to the Royal College of Nursing (RCN).
It was developed with input from over 300 nurses, carers and older people. It reflects the views of older people and carers across the UK that the needs of older people are not always being met when it comes to the care they receive.
The guidance can be used by employers to measure performance and is underpinned by the NMC code of conduct to help nurses provide safe, effective care, in a way that ensures an older person’s dignity and demonstrates respect. It contains practical examples across three core areas: the people, the process and the place.
Dr Peter Carter, chief executive of the RCN, said: ‘As an organisation which actively encourages and empowers healthcare workers to improve dignity in care, we welcome the introduction of this helpful guidance.
‘We know that nursing staff strive to provide the best, most dignified care at all times. In combination with the RCN’s campaign – Dignity: At the heart of everything we do – the timely publication of this guidance will help nurses to deliver the best possible care to older people.
‘As well as detailing best practice, it will also help nurses to secure the support and resources they need to deliver dignified care.’
