Medical student standards up for debate

02 March 2009

The standards that medical students should achieve will be discussed at a conference today. By Jamie Stuttard

The conference, which will draw on a new draft of Tomorrow’s Doctors, aims to discuss how well prepared training medics should be as they come to graduate.

Issues expecting to be considered are the UK’s ageing population, safe prescribing requirements and the possibility of students assisting junior doctors.

Doctors, medical students, health employers and patient groups have the opportunity to attend the conference and influence the GMC’s guidance.

‘We are keen to hear from those involved in providing medical education as well as those who receive it, in order to inform our consultation,’ said Michael Farthing, chair of Tomorrow’s Doctors review group.

Hannah Donnelly, a medical student at the University of Sheffield, said: ‘There needs to be assurance that on completion of a medical course, you possess the necessary skills to become a competent doctor.

‘That level of competence should be agreed between doctors, medical schools, students and the public.’
