RCGP president urges doubling of GP consultation length

GP consultations should be twice as long if they are to meet patient needs, the president of the RCGP has said.

Professor David Haslam told the BMA’s GPs-to-be conference at BMA House in London yesterday: ‘We need more time. We need 10 minutes for the patient’s agenda, and 10 minutes for the doctor’s agenda.’

Thanks to the quality framework, ‘the doctor’s agenda is linked to payments’, he said.

‘So which do you think is going to take priority?’
