LMCs back call for Darzi's resignation thanks to GP newspaper story
25 April 2008
LMCs called for the immediate resignation of health minister Lord Darzi at the annual Scottish LMCs conference.
Lord Darzi
Dr John Ip of Greater Glasgow and Clyde LMC said that Lord Darzi's plan for 250 polyclinics would destabilise general practice.
Speaking yesterday at the conference in Clydebank, Glasgow, Dr Ip said Lord Darzi should feel ashamed of himself.
‘Shame on you Ari Darzi for becoming Gordon Brown's puppet. Resign now,' said Dr Ip.
Dr Ip said: ‘Darzi and the government are hell bent on running down general practice. They want to destabilise a general practice system that has got a 60-year track record.'
Forth Valley LMC put forward a motion which said that Scottish GPs must not tolerate the imposition of views of a London-based tertiary care specialist.
Dr John Rankin of Forth Valley LMC said: ‘Polyclinics in Oban or Galashiels is an utter nonsense. We don't need these organisations in Scotland.'
He added that he had never heard of Darzi until two years ago.
Dr Brian Fitzsimons, of Highland LMC said: ‘I don't think this surgeon had heard of himself until a couple of years ago.'
