Tories want practices to take back out-of-hours care

The Conservative party has pledged to force GPs to take back responsibility for out-of-hours care.

Tory leader David Cameron announced that the party would renegotiate the GMS contract if it came to power.
Speaking before his party’s annual conference in Blackpool, he said GPs would commission out-of-hours services either through their own practice or a co-op.
In August a GP poll found more than twice as many GPs would vote Conservative than would vote Labour in a general election.
The announcement will not please GPs or the public according to GPC deputy chairman Dr Richard Vautrey.
He said: ‘It’s almost as though our politicians are trying to out do each other in the stupidity stakes.
‘The Conservatives have completely missed the point. The issue is not over commissioning, but over resources. There are plenty of good out-of-hours consortia but they don’t have sufficient funding.’
