Scottish LMCs debate case for all-salaried profession
13 March 2009
GPs in Scotland have warned general practice could become a two-tier profession unless it switches to a salaried service.
LMC representatives are debating whether to move to a salaried service at the annual Scottish LMCs conference in Clydebank, West Dunbartonshire this week.
Tayside LMC member Dr Daniel Franks, who proposed the motion, told GP: 'The status quo is not sustainable. The workforce of salaried GPs is overworked and underpaid, while partners are scrabbling to maintain their income.
'If you set up the NHS today, this is not the model you would choose. We are developing a two-tier system.'
GPs will also debate whether more could be done to safeguard electronic patient records, and whether health boards should be allowed to withdraw or significantly change hospital and community services without consulting general practice staff and patients on 12 March.
A motion calling for a tax on chocolate to address Scotland's obesity epidemic is also on the agenda.
