Out-of-hours link boost to use of IT

06 March 2009

Use of the summary care record (SCR) by out-of-hours GPs in Bolton has quadrupled after it was linked to out-of-hours IT systems, NHS Connecting for Health has said.

The link with Adastra - the out-of-hours IT system - means GPs can access patient records without moving between the two systems. Dr Gillian Braunold, clinical director of the SCR programme, said GPs had shown 'a lot of enthusiasm' for the link.

Dr Rob Stokes, medical director of out-of-hours provider BARDOC, said the move would be 'extremely helpful' in ensuring that information follows patients.

Meanwhile, a study in Health Policy found British doctors lead the world in use of IT. A survey of seven countries found doctors in the UK and the Netherlands are the most likely to use IT, while those in the US and Canada use it least.
