GMC to pilot affiliates plan announced

Pilots into GMC affiliates will be rolled out in September.
Under the scheme, lay and medical GMC 'affiliates'will monitor concerns about doctors locally.
One medical and one lay af-filiate will be responsible for a region, where they will discuss poor performance with doctors or record concerns that would not merit a GMC hearing.
The aim is to speed up the resolution of such complaints.
One 12-month pilot will be conducted in London, where the GMC receives more complaints than any other area. Both the affiliates taking part in the pilot will be current members of GMC staff. The second pilot will be in the north east of England, where the medical GMC affiliate will be a SHA employee.
GMC chairman Professor Sir Graeme Catto said the new position would mean minor complaints would receive 'fair and firm action' locally.
'This will deal with many of the issues that cause difficulty,' he said. 'Not seriously bad practice, but minor breaches, will be nipped in the bud.'
The scheme will also involve 'regional medical regulation support teams' to discuss doctors performance with medical directors.
