GMC offers ethics guide

15 February 2008

GPs looking to brush up on Good Medical Practice can now do so online, thanks to the GMC's new interactive guide.

GMC president Sir Graeme Catto said that the guide was launched in response to 'demand over a good number of years to make Good Medical Practice more accessible'.

The guide takes the form of four case studies, each of which explores an ethical dilemma a doctor might face. One, for example, concerns a devout Catholic GP who disapproves of her patient's promiscuous and drug-addled lifestyle.

Another is a cosmetic surgeon concerned that Mrs Melville's second face-lift will be too risky.

The user picks the appropriate response from a multiple choice list, before receiving feedback from the GMC standards committee and links to GMC guidance.

The GMC says that most feedback to the new guidance had been positive. Only one of the 40 responses it has received described it as 'patronising'.
