BTS guidelines for child cough
04 October 2007
The British Thoracic Society (BTS) has published guidelines on the management of child cough.
Absence of fever, tachypnoea and chest signs rule out the risk of complications, the BTS has said.
Chest radiography should be recommended if a child has an acute-onset cough that fails to resolve in two to three weeks. The possibility of an inhaled foreign body and suspicions of pneumonia also warrant referral for chest X-ray.
The BTS reiterated that over-the-counter antihistamines and antihistamine-decongestant combinations were no more effective than a placebo.
Antibiotics and bronchodilators are also not recommended for common head colds.
