Final decision imminent on 2008 quality targets
15 August 2007
Decisions over which clinical areas will be added to the quality framework are one step closer.
The 40-strong expert panel put together by the GPC and NHS Employers has completed the evidence-gathering phase for potential changes to the quality framework 2008/9.
Now it is putting together the final reports, which will be presented to the quality framework subgroup this autumn.
However, any changes are dependent on discussions between the GPC and NHS Employers about the GMS contract.
The expert panel worked through 153 submissions, with most coming from national societies (27 per cent) and patient groups (25 per cent). A further 13 per cent of submissions came from pharmaceutical companies.
Submissions had to be for common conditions cared for by GPs. There also had to be good evidence that changing the way GP practices work in these clinical areas will improve patient care.
Some people were invited to give face-to-face evidence to
the panel.
GPC chairman Dr Laurence Buckman said: ‘Now we have an opportunity to develop the quality framework further, in line with additional government investment, ensuring it reflects the care that patients need.’
