03 August 2007
Drinking a pint of beer or a large glass of wine daily can increase the risk of bowel cancer by 10 per cent, according to UK research. Researchers asked 480,000 people about how much alcohol they consumed. In the six-year follow-up, 1,833 developed colon cancer. Drinking 15g of alcohol a day increased the risk of bowel cancer by 10 per cent, while 30g of alcohol - equivalent to three to four units - increased their bowel cancer risk by around 25 per cent (Cancer Online 2007).
