Child screening does not reduce obesity levels

04 May 2007

Primary schoolchildren should not be routinely screened for obesity in the absence of treatment, according to UK research.

At present, four to five and 10 to 11 year olds are weighed at school with the information fed into the National Childhood Obesity Database. But the researchers found that there was little evidence to show that preventative approaches could reduce a child’s obesity.

The effectiveness of treatment and the potential harms of monitoring or screening are poorly researched, they concluded.
