Greater Manchester GP Dr Kailash Chand's 'Calls on the government to drop its Health and Social Care Bill' petition has surpassed 158,600 signatures since its launch last November.

Unprescedented support for the campaign, backed by former deputy prime minister John Prescott, footballer Rio Ferdinand and comedian Stephen Fry, means it has the highest number of signatories since the e-petitions process launched in August 2011.

The e-petition passed 100,000 views in mid-February. Mr Prescott has since posted a video of him singing the Frank Sinatra classic I'm Gonna Sit Right Down and Write Myself A Letter.

Mr Prescott had pledged to post it if Dr Chand's bid for a parliamentary debate about the Health Bill passed 50,000 signatures.

Latest Twitter backing has arrived in the form of some unlikely celebrities.
