Pension strike threat as union prepares to ballot members
By Nick Bostock, 10 February 2012
Health union Unite has warned that strike action is a 'real possibility' unless ministers back down on plans to cut NHS pensions.
The union will ballot its members over NHS pensions on 20 February unless there is ‘significant movement’ from the government.
The statement from Unite echoes the BMA stance on pension cuts. The BMA council plans to meet on 25 February to discuss a ballot and potential industrial action unless the government offers major concessions.
BMA leaders this week launched an e-petition demanding meaningful talks on pensions.
Unless government proposals are changed, the union will recommend that its members reject them in the ballot.
Unite general secretary Len McCluskey said: ‘There have been no substantive changes from what was on the table before Christmas – our hardworking members will still be expected to pay more, work longer and get less when they retire.
‘The prospect of strike action will be very real unless ministers move off their hardline position.’
