BMA warning after cuts to GP CPD posts in Wales

Cuts to GP CPD co-ordinator posts in Wales could reduce the quality of local education and training and make it more difficult to attract GPs to Wales, the BMA has warned.
Cardiff University's Wales postgraduate deanery is currently consulting on plans to reduce its 22 GP CPD co-ordinator posts to four regional professional leads and four regional delivery managers.
BMA Wales secretary Dr Richard Lewis said the move could result in worse education and training for GPs. 'This is clearly a move driven by financial measures.'
National Association of Sessional GPs chairman Dr Richard Fieldhouse said some CPD co-ordinators run GP groups for salaried and locum GPs, which would lose funding if the posts were cut.
Dr Lewis said a change to CPD arrangements in Wales was concerning because the country was already suffering from a shortage of GPs.
'It could potentially have an adverse impact on attracting GPs to Wales,' he said.
His comments came as the Welsh government announced new plans for a campaign to attract more doctors to Wales.
