CCG management cap hinders push for GP quality

Improving the quality of general practice will be difficult for clinical commissioning groups (CCGs) because the government cap on their management funding is so low, according to a CCG leader.
Dr Gordon: ‘We’ve got to find a way to improve general practice without having to employ a lot of people to do that for us.’
Speaking at an NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement webinar on Wednesday, Dr Shane Gordon, chief executive officer for North Essex CCG, said the NHS Commissioning Board was keen to work with CCGs to improve the quality of general practice.
He said: ‘If we grasp that opportunity we really can become the focal point for quality. There’s plenty to do to try to decrease variation and change the way we deliver care out of a cornershop model.
‘The danger with the £25 per head resource limit is that it makes it very difficult for CCGs to deploy staff resources to improve general practice directly because we are going to have so few staff to draw on.
‘We’ve got to find a way to improve general practice without having to employ a lot of people to do that for us.’
