MPs set to heap more pressure on Health Bill
By Abi Rimmer, 23 January 2012
A report by the House of Commons health select committee is expected to add to growing pressure on the government's Health Bill tomorrow with a warning that the NHS reforms are undermining efforts to cut costs.
Mr Farrar: ‘We have made clear that the government’s reforms to the administrative structures of the NHS are a distraction in terms of addressing these fundamental challenges'
The report is understood to criticise the government's NHS reforms for failing to address problems with elderly care and obstructing the NHS from becoming more efficient.
Reports of critical comments from the Conservative-led committee come just days after the Royal College of Nursing and Royal College of Midwives stated their outright opposition to the Health Bill, and just over a week after 98% of RCGP members voted for the Bill to be withdrawn.
Ahead of the publication of the select committee report, NHS Confederation chief executive Mike Farrar expressed concerns about the state of NHS finances and lack of clinical support for the reforms. ‘From the outset, we have made clear that the government’s reforms to the administrative structures of the NHS are a distraction in terms of addressing these fundamental challenges.
‘We are therefore increasingly worried by the lack of clinical support for the reforms and the fact that clinical opposition to the changes has hardened in recent days.
‘This is a major risk. We have always said that buy-in from healthcare professionals is the key to delivering a workable set of reforms.’
