Practice concern over indemnity
By Abi Rimmer, 24 January 2012
Medical defence organisations have seen a dramatic rise in inquiries following changes to indemnity offered by the Royal College of Nursing (RCN).
The Medical Defence Union reported that email inquiries increased by 35% since the RCN announced the change to indemnities
From January 2012, the RCN changed its policy so that defence organisations representing GP practices could no longer 'come to the RCN to try to recover costs if an RCN member is involved in a clinical negligence action taken against the practice'.
The Medical Defence Union reported that email inquiries increased by 35% since the RCN announced the change and telephone inquiries by 20%. It also reported additional sales of policies.
The Medical Protection Society also reported a 'significant' increase in inquiries and sales following the RCN's policy shift.
