Fed up GPs 'may abandon commissioning'

Many clinical commissioning groups (CCGs) may fail to achieve authorisation in 2013 as 'fed up' GPs walk away, the NHS Alliance has warned.
Dr Michael Dixon told GP magazine there was a ‘significant trickle’ of CCG leaders ready to quit amid increasing frustration.
He said many GPs feel PCTs wield too much power over the size, shape and commissioning decisions of CCGs.
Dr Dixon’s comments came after DH commissioning czar Dame Barbara Hakin said last week that most CCGs had passed the first step towards authorisation.
But Dr Dixon warned progress could be undermined if CCG leaders were denied the freedom to commission the services their patients need.
Many were ‘fed up’ and considering stepping down over their ‘child-adult relationship’ with PCT clusters,’ he said.
‘CCGs feel they are being pushed into certain sizes and configurations. The feeling is they are being asked to do a lot but this is not proportional to the power they have.
‘If we don’t get significant buy-in from GP leaders we are simply not going to have a critical mass of CCGs authorised in 2013.’
