Dr Gerada said she hopes she can keep up with BMA council member Dr Clive Peedell, who is currently running 160 miles from Cardiff to London in protest at the NHS reforms.

Dr Peedell started his journey at a statue of NHS founder Aneurin Bevan in Cardiff, and has dubbed his protest run 'Bevan's Run'.

Dr Gerada will complete the last 10km of the journey, starting in Hyde Park and crossing the finish line at the DH in Westminster.

Dr Gerada said the run would be a good way of showing support for the BMA and its views about the Health Bill.

It comes as a RCGP survey showed 98% of members think the RCGP should call for the Health and Social Care Bill to be withdrawn.

Dr Gerada said: ‘Doing the run is an interesting way of showing my support. The RCGP has always been concerned about the Bill.

‘There is still so much such disquiet about the Bill. It will open the NHS up to too much competition, fragmentation and fundamentally will mean not having a national health service.’

Follow Dr Peedell (@cpeedell) on Twitter as he progresses towards London, using the hashtag #bevansrun. Dr Gerada (@clarercgp) will join the run this weekend, on Sunday 15 January.
