GMC spends £280,000 on private medical insurance for staff

The GMC spends around £280,000 each year for private medical insurance for its staff, the regulator has revealed.
The GMC said that 480 out of 640 permanent staff across the UK are part of the insurance scheme.
Staff who make a claim pay an excess of £250, which the GMC said allows the organisation to ‘keep costs at an acceptable level’.
A GMC spokeswoman said: ‘Like many organisations, we offer a range of benefits to attract and retain staff. Since 1997, we have offered private medical insurance and health screens to our staff.
‘The medical insurance costs equates to 0.7% of the GMC’s full staffing costs. As with all our staff benefits, this is kept under regular review and will be reviewed by our resources committee in 2012.’
Earlier this month the GMC is set to reduce its registration and retention fees with the aim of supporting doctors in financial difficulty.
It said it will cut fees for doctors at the start of their careers and lower the costs for doctors applying for entry on the GP register.
