The Tameside, Greater Manchester GP, who has also served on BMA Council and the GPC, is hoping to force a parliamentary debate in the same way that fuel price campaigners managed this week.

Dr Chand, who backs the Drop The Bill campaign shadow health secretary Andy Burnham spoke exclusively to GP about last week, hopes debate success could further delay the Bill's progress.

He said: 'I need as much publicity as possible to hit my target of 100,000 signatures. There is a lot of concern about the DoH's risk register which still hasn't been published yet and I'm hoping to capitalise on that.'

Dr Chand's backers can register their support at an e-petition which reads: ' ... Calls on the government to drop its Health and Social Care Bill.'
