Dr Brown: hoping to raise the profile of the BMA's equality and diversity committee

Dr Brown, a GP in Glasgow, said she hopes to instil the ethos of ‘equality of opportunity’ in all NHS organisations regardless of age, gender, sexuality, ethnicity religion or disability’.

She also hopes to raise the profile of the committee as well as empower all doctors to achieve their goals.

She said: ‘I strongly believe that young doctors at the start of their careers should do so based on their drive, desire and skill. They should never feel restricted in speciality choice.

‘For example, the days of professors advising medical students of the most 'family friendly' career choices before they've even had a chance to start experiencing their professional lives has to end.’

Dr Brown also said the working environments should become more flexible to ensure inclusivity for all doctors.

She said: ‘The diversity of doctors reinforces and strengthens the NHS. And it is exactly this personal and professional  diversity  that colours the type of doctors we become and helps to create, strengthen, stabilise  and support the NHS in times of constant change.

‘Many doctors have never heard of the BMA’s equality and diversity committee and are oblivious to the work that we do behind the scenes to ensure fairness and opportunity for all. It’s time to increase awareness of our role and state our place on the map.'
