EMIS says patient record shut down incident 'unlikely' to happen again

EMIS has said it is 'highly unlikely' there will be a repeat of the technical problems that stopped GPs from accessing patient records and forced practices to close for several hours.
Last month a series of ‘hardware failures’ at EMIS meant almost 800 practices were unable to access electronic patient records.
But EMIS chief executive Sean Riddle said an investigation into the event shows that outage was a ‘very rare occurrence’ and the result of a number of ‘complex, interacting factors’.
He said: ‘At its core was a series of multiple, consecutive component failures in one of our storage devices – combined with a previously unknown bug in the hard disk firmware – that culminated in an unexpected shutdown of the entire device.
‘A number of lessons have been learned and whilst it is highly unlikely the same sequence of rare events will be repeated, a comprehensive action plan has already commenced.’
