Health secretary Andrew Lansley said the campaign to develop new health apps is part of the drive to give patients better access to information that will ‘put them in control of their health’.

As well as submitting ideas for new health apps, health professionals are also being asked to name their favourite existing health application.

Mr Lansley said: ‘Over the next six weeks, we want to hear from patients, health professionals and budding app developers on their ideal new app.

'This is a unique opportunity for the NHS and those who develop apps to not only showcase their work but bring to life new ideas and realise true innovation in healthcare.’

A panel of judges, including NHS medical director Sir Bruce Keogh, will choose the best app ideas to showcase at an event in autumn.
