Scottish GPs want to be involved in commissioning
By Susie Sell, 11 March 2011
Scottish GPs have called on GP leaders to look at models of GP commissioning for Scotland to give GPs an increased role in decision about services locally.
GPs at the Scottish conference of LMCs showed support for a Scottish model of GP commissioning, but were keen to implement this without creating a market in the NHS in Scotland.
GMC LMC Secretary Dr David Bell said GPs in Scotland could learn some lessons from the reorganisation in England.

He urged conference to accept the motion, which called for GPs to have an increased role in decision making within the NHS in Scotland and for the Scottish GPC to explore models of commissioning.
He said: ‘Without us holding NHS budgets, getting into fights with consultant colleagues or dismantling our health service for private gain, we find a Scottish solution that builds on professionalism and our firm vision of working together with all our clinical and management colleagues for the benefit of the Scottish NHS and the future care of patients.’
The motion, which also rejected the market-driven health policies of the English government, was carried.
