BMA members plot 'day of action' against Health Bill reforms
By Tom Ireland, 18 February 2011
A group of GPs within the BMA are discussing 'days of action' to disrupt the government's NHS reforms, according to GPC member Dr Ron Singer.
Dr Singer: frustration about the BMA
Dr Singer said momentum against the Bill had built in the past few days into 'thoughts of collective action' including 'abandoning Choose and Book for a day' and other types of disobedience.
'There are people within the BMA talking about days of action because of frustration about the BMA and its failure to take a leading stance on this,' said Dr Singer.
The BMA has confirmed that a meeting of its London Regional Council passed motions calling for the BMA to reject the Health Bill in its entirety and to poll members on 'forms of action' that doctors can take to stop the legislation.
The meeting of the BMA's London's regional Council was 'incredibly anti the reforms', according to Dr Deborah Colvin, chairwoman of City and Hackney LMC.
The meeting signals the first step in a shift towards all-out opposition to the Health Bill by the BMA.
It concluded with members voting in favour of the BMA condemning the Bill in its entirety, which will be passed on to the main BMA council ahead of its Special Representative Meeting in March.
