The list of the top 10 branded prescription drugs by NHS spend

Prescriptions for asthma drug fluticasone propionate (Seretide) cost the NHS in England £366.2m in 2009, figures from the NHS Information Centre show.

Spending on the top 10 medicines under patent protection accounted for £1.38bn in 2009, 16% of all the money spent on prescriptions dispensed in the community.

Tiotropium (Spiriva) is the only other asthma therapy among the top 10 branded medicines by NHS spend and the only diabetes treatment is insulin glargine.

The list is dominated by drugs for cardiovascular disease, such as atorvastatin, candesartan cilexetil, ezetimibe, and psychiatric treatments, such as olanzapine and quetiapine.
