SIGN releases leg ulcer advice for Scotland

SIGN has issued an updated guideline on the assessment and treatment of venous leg ulcers for patients in Scotland.
The SIGN guideline recommends the use of pentoxyifylline 400mg three times daily for up to six months to improve healing in patients with chronic venous leg ulcers.
It advises that patients should be treated using simple, non-adherent dressings and high compression, multi-component bandaging.
The new guideline suggests considering patch-testing in leg ulcer patients with dermatitis/eczema.
The national clinical guideline replaces previous advice on venous leg ulcers, SIGN 26, published in 1998.
Recurrence of venous leg ulcers in healed patients can be prevented by below-knee graduated compression hosiery.
The guidance says specialist leg ulcer clinics are the optimal choice for treatment in the community.
