New 'GP commissioning council' meets to discuss White Paper plans

By Tom Ireland, 01 September 2010

A new GP 'commissioning federation' has held its first meeting to discuss the implementation of the White Paper proposals.

The NHS Alliance’s GP Commissioning Federation council includes a range of clinical commissioners from each region of England, including GPs and doctors from secondary and community care, as well as both PCT and practice-based commissioners.

Dr Amit Bhargava, co-lead of the GP Commissioning Federation, hoped the group would be at the 'forefront' of the ‘successful, fair and wise implementation of GP commissioning’.

‘We had a lengthy debate and reached consensus about the critical value of the transition, where behaviours, work plans, resource allocation and phased delivery are tightly managed for success,’ said Dr Bhargava.

Under plans set out in the White Paper Liberating the NHS, GPs will take over full responsibility for commissioning NHS services by 2013.
