Public want smoking in cars banned
19 August 2010
The public want to see smoking in cars banned and organ donation and school sport improved, a survey suggests.
A report published by the Faculty of Public Health (FPH) found that these were the key topic people said they wanted to see the government prioritise. It also showed around 8 out of 10 people think food and alcohol labelling should be clearer.
'Health Nudges: When the Public Wants Change and the Politicians Don't Know It' also found the public want more of the NHS budget to be spent on public health measures.
It said currently only 4% of the total health budget is spent on public health, but the public this should be increased to around 30%.
Rachael Jolley, report co-author and FPH's head of policy, said: ‘Polling results carried out for this report show that the British really care about the nation's health and want stronger government action when it comes to issues such as smoking, sport in schools and organ-donation.
‘Personal responsibility is important, but the British public seems to be overwhelmingly of the opinion that government intervention has its part to play too
Alan Maryon-Davis, report co-author and former FPH president, said: ‘We hope that the government will take note of the public's call for action and their priorities signalled in this paper as well as consider history's lessons showing that personal responsibility, societal change and government action can combine to create the right levers for improving health.’
