The DoH was criticised by the Public Accounts Committee in 2007 for paying £12m for a 50% share in Dr Foster Intelligence even though DoH advisers valued it at £10-15m.

Dr Foster Intelligence was launched in 2006 as a joint venture between the NHS Information Centre and Dr Foster Holdings LLP. The DoH owns a 48.75% stake with the rest held by Dr Foster Holdings LLP.

The review is in line with the coalition government’s policy to maximise the value of assets and commercial opportunities.

Health minister Simon Burns said: ‘In the health White Paper we set out a vision for an information revolution to give patients greater choice and control. We will publish our information strategy paper in the autumn. This review will ensure that the DoH is making the most of Dr Foster Intelligence.’
