MRCGP exams change to include 'variable' pass marks

The Royal College of GPs (RCGP) has announced changes to the MRCGP exam following a review.
The changes aim to make the Clinical Skills Assessment (CSA) and Applied Knowledge Test (AKT) components of the exam ‘more relevant to the working lives of candidates’, says the RCGP.
In the CSA, a pass mark will be set on the day by the ‘combined judgements of examiners’, rather than the current requirement to pass eight out of 12 cases. The method which will allow the College to deal with day-to-day variability in the difficulty of case mixes, said the RCGP.
The AKT will pilot ‘free text’ answers rather than multiple choice and interactive video clips.
The RCGP’s chief examiner, Dr Sue Rendel, said candidates ‘should not notice any difference in their experience of the exam or the way in which they prepare for it.’
