NMC raids GMC for fitness to practise director

The NMC has announced the appointment of Jackie Smith as the new director of its fitness to practise service.
Jackie Smith will be joining the NMC on 16 August from the GMC, where she is currently assistant director, GMC liaison and also interim head of investigation.
Professor Dickon Weir-Hughes, NMC chief executive and registrar said: ‘Jackie brings significant strategic experience and achievement from the GMC including the management of the unit which investigates complaints against doctors and delivering performance against targets.’
The director of fitness to practise is a key member of the NMC’s director team and is responsible for driving forward improvements and change to meet the NMC’s goal of safeguarding the health and wellbeing of the public.
Commenting on her appointment, Ms Smith said: ‘I am delighted to be given this opportunity and excited to be working at the NMC. I am sure my extensive experience of regulation will be an asset in this challenging role.’
The director has a specific lead responsibility for the overall performance of the fitness to practise directorate of over 100 staff and ensuring the service is delivered according to agreed targets.
