GPs and nurses are standing for election
By Tom Ireland, 06 May 2010
GPs and nurses will be hoping for the support of their communities as the UK goes to the polls in the most unpredictable election for a generation.
GP Dr Sarah Wollaston was selected by constituents in an ‘open primary'
Independent candidate Dr Stephen Ford is hoping to overturn the 5,000 Conservative majority in Hexham, Northumberland, with the aim of giving health professionals their autonomy back and reducing bureaucracy.
Meanwhile in Totnes, Devon, GP Dr Sarah Wollaston is expected to take over the current Tory seat. She is the UK's first candidate to have been selected by constituents in an ‘open primary'.
Despite odds of 14/1, Lib Dem candidate and GP Dr Charles West is confident he can see off the Conservatives in Shewsbury and Atcham, Shropshire, who he believes will ‘leave the NHS in a mess'.
Dr Ian Campbell, standing in Newark, Nottinghamshire, joins several other GPs hoping to stand for Labour as it continues to struggle in the polls.
Shadow Conservative health minister and nurse Anne Milton will be defending her Guildford seat in Surrey, alongside Tory nurses Heather Macleod (Glasgow South West) and Nadine Dorries (Mid Bedfordshire).
Health minister and former nurse Ann Keen could lose her position as MP in Brentford and Isleworth, south-west London, while nurse Karen Jennings is standing for Labour in Hornsey and Wood Green, north London.
For the Lib Dems, nurses Rosie Sharpley, Frank Hollowell and David Harding Price will be standing in Woking, Surrey, Copeland, Cumbria and Sleaford and North Hykeham, Lincolnshire, respectively.
Check Healthcare Republic for results from each of these seats on Friday.
