Bariatric surgery can boost fertility

Weight loss surgery should be used to improve the fertility of morbidly obese people, an expert says.
Professor Scott Nelson, Muirhead professor of obstetrics and gynaecology at the University of Glasgow, writes in this week's GP that the global obesity epidemic has had a huge impact on fertility.
Bariatric surgery may be an option for the morbidly obese, where lifestyle interventions do not reduce weight sufficiently to improve conception, he says.
Young women who undergo the surgery benefit from massive weight loss, normalisation of their menstrual cycle, enhanced sexual function and improvement of their metabolic profile. Professor Nelson backs using 'proven therapies and interventions to mitigate risks associated with obesity'.
